testing the firmness of faith
Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness.
1 Timothy 4:7
REFLECTION
Drinking sure seemed like fun and games in the beginning. And it was for a bit.
Granted, many of us begin far before our physical bodies were ready (are they ever?) for the poison we introduced, so the fun and games was literally children goofing off.
But beyond that—the electric draw of the first drink continues to compel us far after the initial fun wears off.
We are swept up in what seems like a chasing after the wind. After a while, though, the wind picks up. We are dancing in a tornado.
Months and years have gone by. Sometimes many, sometimes fewer. But almost invariably, we leave something of ourselves behind.
Sometimes it’s parts of us we didn’t want—we fled. Sometimes it’s vital pieces that we didn’t mean to discard. It just happened.
But whether we had a foundation of faith to begin with or not, we slowly put bits of faith into the bottle. We turn to it for all things and circumstances.
This would be ludicrous if we thought through it, but addiction works on us by numbing our mind to concede, to conform and to close the door on the truths that would set us free
We are all in training. Some more rigorous than others. But whether through action or inaction, we are conditioning ourselves for good or for evil.
Addiction trains us to depart.
Recovery trains us to bind together.
God, help me stay in the center of recovery.
