Bad Driving...

lulled into safety

Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.

Ephesians‬ ‭5‬:‭15‬-‭16

REFLECTION

I’m a really good, safe and reliable driver.

Which is what everyone will tell you, especially when they’re about to tell you about a time they screwed up.

The other day, I pulled out to make a left turn and realized, too late, that a car coming from the right was a little closer than I thought at first glance.

I paused, already in the road. And was greeted by the angry horn of the car coming from the left which I was now slightly blocking.

No wreck, thankfully-it wasn’t a very busy interchange. But it was embarrassing and careless. And it could have been dangerous.

I do pride myself as being a good driver, and I hate it when people do stupid things like what I’d just done.

It was a good reminder that watchfulness cannot take days off. Even in safe places, I’m one bad choice away from making a mess.

And when it comes to our thought life…

I’m careless a lot of the time. I’m not watchful. I’m unfiltered. And it can take its toll.

I need the reminder to treat every moment as an intersection. Rather than being lulled into sleep by the decisions that seem innocuous, I need the Lord’s help to sharpen my mind-staying ever ready for the random mishap that will require me to be at my best.

I need to equip myself for the day with attentive time in God's word, with prayerful consideration of what’s ahead, and then with the willingness to carry out his will in the day ahead.

God, steer me away from mindless decisions; keep me attentive behind the wheel.
