Broken Jars

Make the Best Vessels

But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.

II Corinthians 4:7

Clay jars - it’s an ancient metaphor for the human body that wouldn’t resonate with me as much as it does were it not for the 90’s band who took the phrase as their name and had at least one hit.

But it’s an apt picture of the addict and alcoholic. What better description than one of brokenness?

And indeed, a broken clay vessel is worthless if its purpose is to hold something.

Luckily we find that our purpose is not to hold onto something—nor is our strength found in storing it up.

Rather, we are renewed and strengthened for the day by the degree we pour into others.

And as we give out of our brokenness, God continues to pour into us. One day at a time.

We become vessels of transmission rather than storage. His Spirit flows through us and is seen by others because not in spite of our broken parts.
