TRUTH
But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.
James 3:17-18
REFLECTION
How do you go from book smarts to wisdom?
I wanted badly to be able to get enough knowledge about myself that I’d cure myself.
This is the promise I couldn’t help but hear from the wealth of books written. Self-help at its finest: an eager participant and a stockpile of advice.
It’s good as far as it goes, but mileage may vary if it stays cooped up in the living room of our souls.
Not much changes when I don’t put into practice the things I arm my mind with.
The danger for the addict is acute: piddle around too long and the boredom of our newfound way of life gives way to the old fantasy thoughts of making it better.
We cannot replace the life we are fleeing with mere ideas. They must give way to a new way of living.
I had to begin taking real steps in the real world that had real consequence before my forward progress started to mean anything.
The books and the experiences of others did serve their purpose well. But they’re meant to spurn us onward not protect us from doing anything.
Living is uncomfortable, but that doesn’t have to be a bad thing.
God, keep me motivated, keep me moving.
