Courageous

in this present darkness

TRUTH

I desire to do your will, my God; your law is within my heart.

Psalms‬ ‭40‬:‭8

REFLECTION

Desire is a funny thing. Over time it’s morphed from one thing to another.

During active addiction, it is always inward-focused. It looked out only to guide me toward what would fill me. And I only sought things for myself.

As we get sober, desire becomes schizophrenic.

One day we are compelled toward God and our fellow man and want only the selfless commissions of service work. The next day, we are salivating over trivial selfish delights.

We rock back and forth precariously between the sober world and the drunk world. We pay little attention to the spiritual battle we participate in, even as march toward the front lines.

To the extent that we surround ourselves with good influences do we find it easier to more often flood our minds with the things of the spirit.

Prayers come to our lips more often. We regurgitate those from others, and we begin to form our own.

Reliance on God begins to seem a viable path for the first time ever.

Looking around, it becomes evident that the most content people are men of faith.

The proclamation is that God did for them what they couldn’t do for themselves.

The prayers of recovery begin to take new life as we ask daily for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry it out.

I’d only one edit—to be given courage as well.

God, give me the courage to live in your will today.
