TRUTH
Do not swerve to the right or to the left; turn your foot away from evil.
Proverbs 4:27
REFLECTION
I’ve never wanted to step straight into evil.
Maybe some do, but I’ve always had a healthy fear of knowingly pursuing bad stuff.
I get into trouble defining terms.
I think in the infancy of my addiction there were evil things at work coercing me to drop my guard. Coercing me to bend my own lines of acceptability.
It only takes a little bit of leeway to fall a long way down.
I’ve said before that I was curious, and it’s that curiosity that helped eek away at any moral lines I’d drawn.
The first to go were simple. It was merely the act of trying things on for size. The classic peer pressure scenario. Only, truth be told, most of the pressure came from myself.
I remember vividly those days and months where to turn back would have been a simple choice without much to do.
I do believe, as recovery literature suggests, that many of us could have avoided the deep trappings of addiction if we’d stopped soon enough.
The issue is I that I didn’t find sufficient reason to stop experimenting while I still had the time to arrest my addiction.
So much better to heed these proverbs instead of risking it all—simply staying away from the possibilities of evil and wrongdoing is worth it every time.
God, redirect my curiosity into creativity.
