Grow Up

you’re not a kid anymore

TRUTH

From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so. Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and salt water?

James‬ ‭3‬:‭10‬-‭11‬

REFLECTION

We are usually full of contradiction when we arrive in the rooms of recovery with our tail tucked between our legs.

We are living in defiance of the norms of society. We claim independence, but the gaping hole in our gut tells us a different story when we are quiet enough to listen.

We want the best of both worlds. We want the satisfaction and freedom of our own ways; we want the relief that we get from our vices.

But we also want the long lasting ease and comfort we spot in others. We want the carefree joy that deems to elude us the harder we look to achieve it.

We want to keep drinking but also be ok. We want the highs without the consequences.

We are children.

Choices must be made. We’ve been making them throughout this whole ordeal, so this isn’t something new.

But if we are to change, we must begin to change. And if we are conquered and the changing feels a hopeless endeavor, we must get help.

There is nothing worse than the recognition of complete failure and abject powerlessness. But there’s nothing more freeing than the acceptance of a way out that seemed a pipe dream.

If we’re going to live, we need light and life and hope.

If we’re going to change, we must cut off the parts of ourselves that have chained us to the cycle of addiction.

If we’re going to stand a chance, we better reach for help quickly.

God, help me grow up and stick close to you.
