TRUTH
For a man’s ways are before the eyes of the Lord, and he ponders all his paths.
Proverbs 5:21
REFLECTION
We talk about the “easier, softer way” in recovery a lot. Usually, it’s referencing the mistaken idea that we don’t have to do all the work that’s been suggested.
We are good at finding shortcuts. We are good at cutting corners and getting by.
It’ll come back to bite us in recovery, though. We are in the business of building the foundation by which to live happily without our vices.
This is no problem in the short term. But as the days, weeks and months add up, discontent is sure to follow if we only take half measures.
I have found that the easier, softer way is to follow directions.
It is certainly the simplest path. And it saves a bunch of turmoil and possible relapses.
When I can get over myself enough to accept the possibility that perhaps God really is out there at the helm of the universe, it becomes easier to fall in line.
This can feel like a submission. And it should. Because it is. That means you’re actually being honest about it.
We must get over this obsession with ourselves being the center of our universe.
By turning over our minds and our attitudes to Him, we can begin to take steps into the sunlight of the Spirit.
It’ll be uncomfortable. Maybe for a while. But we won’t be wrecking our lives and bodies anymore.
God, I want to believe. Keep me away from shortcuts.
