Newly Weaned

Infants again and again

TRUTH

But I have calmed and quieted myself, I am like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child I am content.

Psalms‬ ‭131‬:‭2‬

REFLECTION

After the early days of seeking more and different satisfaction and pleasure from drinking, we end up fleeing ourselves rather than running toward any oasis.

When I rounded the final corners of addiction and began to stare into the desert of options I had left, I began to realize the truth.

I needed something to run towards again.

Church gets a bad rap because it’s really easy for it to miss the mark and become a rhetoric on doing certain things at certain times in certain ways.

It becomes the do-gooder society that it was never intended to be.

So, we turn from it, and in the process turn from the cosmic power that it was intended to amplify and represent.

The temptation in early sobriety is to run back to a group, to a church, to a fellowship, and allow them to fix us.

This would be fine if it worked.

Of course, the wrinkle is that it does seem to work at first. Groups and churches are great (often) at welcoming and encouraging and offering guidance.

But where are we then headed?

Are we now aiming at a human construct for our salvation, or can we begin to see that all good spiritual things must be pointed toward their spiritual roots?

I needed all of the above to help redirect my life back toward and centered around a God that I still didn’t exactly understand. Even with a childhood’s worth of knowledge rattling around in my head, I was having to retake those first spiritual steps toward relationship with Him.

It’s been worth it. He offers rest and real contentment.

I’ve had a little, but I’m still early on the journey that never ends.

God, keep me close to you.
