Good Thoughts

TRUTH

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord.

Isaiah‬ ‭55‬:‭8‬

REFLECTION

I don’t have to look far into my thought life to be grateful that God is on another level.

It is always a huge adjustment when getting cleaned up from a life driven mostly by whatever self-centered desires currently fit our mood. God-centeredness is not exactly en vogue.

Far simpler is the mentality that brought us to our knees in submission. This is the norm these days: it’s all about personal freedom, individuality, free will etc.

Well, my free will ran riotously through my life and some of those around me.

My free will is a moron. Though he usually doesn’t think so.

And it’s funny—there were moments of clarity during addiction. We all have these little glimmers of realization, right?

Maybe they last for a moment, maybe a day, maybe even a season.

But then we continue on in our own way.

It’s the easy way. It becomes life threatening, but it requires nothing of us to continue along the path that slopes ever so slightly downhill.

We jog along with a hapless assurance in ourselves and slowly abandoning the bedrock of what could be an eternal wellspring for our lives.

Because it’s hard to surrender.

It sucks to crucify the ego.

It burns and stings and scars and blisters the very core of our identity.

And that’s the issue.

Our identity.

It can’t hold water. We’ve completely entrusted ourselves to whatever whim is in front of us—betting the farm on there being no spiritual substance past what we can touch.

But there’s another way. It’s longer, harder, uphill and with fewer initial dopamine hits.

But it has a great benefit package.

God, may I think your good thoughts.
