Clinging

Too tight to drift

TRUTH

On my bed I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the night.

Psalms‬ ‭63‬:‭6

REFLECTION

Sleeplessness is the enemy of happiness.

I think we often over emphasis the necessity of happiness, but you can’t throw it out either.

Think about the last time you were up in the night with worry or remorse. Think about the anxiety.

Sometimes it’s a white-hot prong that impales our rest and demands our attention.

Sometimes it’s a splinter that informs our dreams.

Where do we turn when it shakes us at 2am?

Do we staple our eyes shut and hope for the best?

If you’re like me, the more I want to turn away from those thoughts, the further into them I seem to travel.

Sometimes the psalms can instruct us very practically.

The best salve for the shrapnel of my mind is a barrage of scripture, though it comes with a warning, at least for me.

It’s not an arcade or a slot machine. I shouldn’t expect to insert the coins of my mind and then receive either a momentary fix or a once in a lifetime influx of power and direction.

I need the layering effects of a life constantly directed by God. The moments of doubt and trepidation are the leaky pieces of me that I haven’t allowed Him to patch.

The dead of night is an opportune time to let my guard down rather than raise it up. And then, with a willing heart allow the riches of His truths to flood me.

The temptation is to flee. The invitation is to open the door.

God, use my anxieties to feed my thirst for you.
