Inadequate
ill-equipped and stumbling

TRUTH
It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.
John 6:63
REFLECTION
We are completely ill-equipped for what we have to do.
We can’t stop doing the things we don’t want to do.
We can’t even think the thoughts we know we’re supposed to be thinking.
When offered help, it usually feels like a flimsy, ill-conceived plan to dry up for long enough to get miserable.
We know we need help, but we’re worried that only transformation would make a dent in the mess we’ve made.
And we aren’t sure if we are willing to be transformed even if it were possible.
Yes, it’s a pickle. And one that more people should consider.
You don’t have to be badly afflicted with addiction to need the transforming power of grace to take hold and shake you.
Search your heart and you’ll find a mess somewhere.
It’s why I can be stone cold sober and far removed from my own addiction but still in desperate need of the life-giving power of Christ to work in and through and around me.
The acute problem of addiction is removed. Now the deadly temptations of the rest of life creep in.
But there is life and goodness and hope in the word of God. And I’m grateful I am willing to search it daily.
God, reveal yourself to me.
