the grace of re-memory

TRUTH

My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments, for length of days and years of life and peace they will add to you.

Proverbs‬ ‭3‬:‭1‬-‭2‬

REFLECTION

My memory is a nuisance.

It’s very easy to forget simple truths. And impossibly difficult to turn back once I’ve started down the wrong path.

Desensitization is maybe the most dangerous force that we encounter. And addiction feeds on our tendencies to creep away from the strongholds of our faith.

In many ways my childhood should have fortified me against a lot of stupid things I ended up doing.

I knew better almost every time I made the choice to try something or go somewhere or hang out with the wrong crowd.

All it took was a little straying. A little curiosity. A little bending of my own standards and viewpoints.

The beginning of addiction for one person looks exactly like innocent experimentation for another.

It’s a roulette wheel. Who’s to say which will develop a problem.

For me, I slid straight down because I was fearless from early on. Remarkably, stupidly, fearless.

And the progression was quick. Remarkably, thankfully, fast - allowing me to smack bottom pretty quickly too.

And thank God I was able to begin remembering and relearning the truths that I’d grown up with quickly as well.

God, help me see the dangers ahead.
