Easier...
in the long run
And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us.
1 John 5:14
REFLECTION
In some ways we have it easy as addicts.
It’s easy to turn to God in the hopes of help and healing and faith…
When all other paths have been exhausted.
It’s easy to pray…
When after years have gone by, we are emptier than when we started.
It’s easy to live one day at a time…
When after missing weeks and months at a time we hit the brick bottom of hopelessness.
It’s easy to adopt faith like a child…
When we’ve lived like one for so many years already.
It’s easy to forge and grow new, healthy friendships…
When we’ve burned down our previous ones like a forest fire.
It’s easy to live in the moment…
When looking back or ahead becomes a crushing affair.
It’s easy to work the steps…
When we’ve already tried every other possible way for relief.
It’s easy to sleep soundly…
When the exhaustion of the past settles over us.
Sobriety is easy…
When it’s the only way out.
Thank God we’ve found the way out. Many don’t. Many others leave it behind and try again to manage on their own.
But when I conceded that help would be good and welcome in my life, the door to full joy opened just a hair. And I liked what I saw.
God, keep me willing.
