Everything an Idol...
hard to hide
Little children, keep yourselves from idols.
1 John 5:21
REFLECTION
We’ve been making idols from the dust ever since we crawled out of it.
Isn’t this the fuel that powers much of the life happening around us? Isn’t it what powered our own addiction and the slippery slope that led to it?
We are hunting. We are prey seeking the kill. We love the chase and the fear and the blood.
But it all changes when we catch something. I put myself at the mercy of addiction. Unbeknownst, I put my faith in a power greater than myself and took it up.
I thought I knew I better. But I didn’t know the half of it.
This is what idolatry looks like: a slightly drunken morning with lofty ideals, big dreams, no hope.
Isn’t this what we were after? Let’s go all in.
But I was never all in to begin with. I was on the outskirts. Cautious and attuned. I did not know I was in the current until it was too late.
The undertow is undefeated.
And in this I am sure: I have always put my faith in something—whether I labeled it as such or not.
I have always been seeking wholeness—whether I knew what that would look like or not.
God, show me your goodness that I may seek after your treasures.
