Falling...
pride is a water slide
When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom.
Proverbs 11:2
REFLECTION
We are going to be saturated with something.
Whether it’s ourselves, our desires, our thoughts or it’s in service of others, of a cause, of God is a choice that doesn’t always seem like one.
It’s a choice because it’s made up of little choices over time. It’s a calculus that we aren’t aware of until choices have been made.
Self-centeredness is cultivated from the well-intentioned pride that serves me well until I depend on it alone.
This is the point of over-saturation when it then becomes difficult to live without this skewed worldview.
In the same way, though more difficult to return to, sacrifice in service to others bleeds me of that damaging self-centered pride.
Sincerity, I felt, had to come first. But it actually was a result of, rather than a prerequisite to the service.
As I step toward service and gratitude and God, the worldview I had clung to begins to unravel. As the threads fall, I realize how flimsy they were all along and how tenuous my walk has been.
Maybe deep wisdom is reserved for the more experienced, but we can begin accumulating it as soon as we surrender our self-importance at the doorway to sobriety and a new life.
God, help me treat this new life with the humility I don’t deserve to have found.
