Forgetful Meaninglessness
truly, almost nothing matters.
TRUTH
I am your servant; give me understanding, that I may know your testimonies!
Psalm 119:125
REFLECTION
How can we expose the real priorities in our life? When I was newly sober, I had the good fortune to also be newly adult and without a calendar of events tugging at my attention.
The docket was clear. This was easy mode, though I didn’t know it. I could devote practically all my time to recovery, to work, and to friends.
Yet even in this ideal scenario, the creep of unimportance infiltrated my non-existent calendar. I was able to ignore the simple, small list of priorities in my life for the sake of my own wants.
Why? Because no matter our station, the primary condition of our hearts is not great unless we purposely set them on something outside ourselves.
We can profess love while ignoring our lover. We can proclaim salvation while ignoring our savior. We can talk about recovery while not experiencing the real fruits of it ourselves.
It’s all too easy to put trivial things above eternal ones as I live one day at a time. It’s a simple matter to drift.
I drift easily and often.
I prioritize haphazardly and seldom.
I think about it a lot. But actually modifying my daily cadence? There’s a reason we call them habits. Once we are locked in, it becomes very difficult to add or change.
This is why our daily routines are so vital. We must seek daily the path of recovery, salvation and service.
God use me as an instrument of your goodness.
