TRUTH

But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.

James‬ ‭1‬:‭22

REFLECTION

Recovery has a biased toward action.

It can feel dogmatic sometimes.

For every complaint, there is a quip, for every hesitation, an observation.

You’d have to try to not receive some sort of concerted direction when you arrive in need of help.

And this is good usually.

We do need action. We do need to stay in the motion of the grace and spirit of God. We do need to be moving in order to be steered by Him.

Direction is good when it comes from wise counsel. And sometimes, even when it’s a good word regurgitated from a moron.

But here’s the thing: I’ve got to put it into practice.

In the beginning, my thinker was very broken. I just needed to start forming the habit of following directions and doing things.

As I stuck around and grew up a bit, I developed a track record of faith for myself. I began to be able to sort through and rank the directions. I began to come up with my own suggestions surrounding this spiritual walk I was enjoying.

And right there in the adolescence of my sobriety I became vulnerable, as we all do, to the consumption of more ideas than I was capable of practicing.

“Keep it simple” was less attractive than “think, think, think.”

There’s no inherent wrongness in putting on your thinking cap. Just don’t let it deceive you into thinking it’ll replace good old-fashioned action.

God, keep me on the narrow path.
