TRUTH
For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like.
James 1:23-24
REFLECTION
The temptation to sit idly by and receive healing through osmosis is ever present as we enter the world of recovery.
It is easy to look around and see the effortlessness displayed by others to relax and take it easy, to keep coming back, to live and let live.
They seem happy, joyous and free and they say it takes minimal effort to sustain.
Despite the rest of their instructions, we can trick ourselves into believing it will take only the act of suiting up and showing up to get the same results.
We are still looking for the easier, softer way even after painstakingly coming to terms with our addiction.
We are looking for comfort.
But even though sobriety can be comfortable and often is easier than the alternative, we aren’t exempt from the hard work of excavating ourselves from the center of our lives.
God doesn’t want a semi-conscious, comfortable linger-er.
He wants the fiery abandon of the lost who have been set on the path to freedom.
It serves us well to open our ears and hear both the good news of hope as well as the instructions for how to live.
Hope is free. Grace is free. Fully living costs everything and is worth it.
God, ignite me with your purpose.
