Lazy Rivers...
illusions of peace
But godliness with contentment is great gain.
1 Timothy 6:6
REFLECTION
Much time has been wasted looking for this one thing—contentment.
Wasn’t it from our discontent and maladjustment to normal life that the allure of our vices took shape?
Don’t we pine after the idea of contentment as though it were a lazy river we hope to one day relax in?
And don’t we also feel as though we probably will never reach it?
As addiction progresses, the illusion of satisfaction grows larger in our minds and slips further away in reality.
The simple fact is we are looking for the right thing in the wrong place.
We have fleeting satisfaction with diminishing returns. Our need is infinite and life-long though.
We don’t outgrow our need for contentment, nor do we find adequate replacements as our ability to acquire things increases.
We are in need of a spiritual salve which only God provides. This is discouraging to the extent that we close ourselves off to God.
But as we allow willingness to work in us, we open the doors to true contentment.
God, help me look to you and not to myself for contentment.
