Maybe I’m The Afterglow

TRUTH

Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.

James‬ ‭1‬:‭18

REFLECTION

I certainly had no aspirations upon arrival to rehab.

My propulsion was entirely dependent on the fears I was running from, and my hope was wholly placed on the strength I hoped I had.

I was even then, after reaching for help, mostly worried about my own skin and what it would cost me to mend it.

It took a while for my mind to catch up to sober actions. It took the direction of others to point me back toward a self-sustaining spiritual walk.

And it certainly took many days and months of walking before my brain caught up with my body.

I sobered up before I sobered up. I was physically righted long before I was spiritually okay.

I went through the motions, but those early months were a period of carving out larger chunks of me than were already missing to make room for the God I’d kicked out.

We always have enough room for Him to reside in us, but it always requires more than we first think.

We are the afterglow of His radiance, and He requires all of us, not a part of us.

That’s the real quirk of getting sober and living spiritually. We confront the all or nothing choices head-on.

We cannot drink just a little bit.

We cannot die to self just in part.

We cannot follow Christ some of the time.

Addiction is a wonderful tool for viewing these truths accurately. It’s all or nothing.

If I’m to live in the truth, I’d better start filling my mind with it.

God, fill me daily.
