Pure Power
behind the illusory wall

TRUTH
Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers.
James 1:16
REFLECTION
What is addiction, but deceit?
It promises satisfaction, joy, fulfillment, and peace of mind. It gives friendship, fellowship, laughter and purpose for a time.
And it fades.
It doesn’t lie in the beginning. We usually get some or all of those good things.
It under-promises and over-delivers.
That’s why the snare is so tight when we realize we are trapped.
All the bad stuff comes later. Reality checks us and we begin to lose hold on the blessings of the life we’d been living by self-propulsion.
We’ve been deceived. And we’ve usually become deceivers in the process.
Cleaning up begins within and spreads outside of ourselves. I had to get broken enough inside to concede outside. And it wasn’t fun.
As we live our new lives, free of the poison, we can still slip into its traps.
The deceit that got us the first time was just one flavor of self-centered desire. I don’t have to be drinking to develop unhealthy, selfish desires again.
This is what I guard against, this is what I pray for strength to combat.
I have enough power to withstand some of the temptation some of the time, but it’ll win in the end if I don’t enlist help.
This is what reliance upon God is all about. Conceding that I am still powerless; He has all the power. And by grace, I’m given enough to live by.
God gives us the eyes to see the illusory wall. And with His help, we can walk through it.
God, please give me the power for today.
