TRUTH
Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.
James 1:12
REFLECTION
In every area of life, it is common knowledge that those who persevere through difficulty are rewarded.
This holds true all around us, we see it, we experience it, and we celebrate it.
Do hard things. Never give up. Just do it.
We are familiar with the worldly versions of these truths.
But when it comes to our addiction, to the temptations that surround us, to the trappings of our minds, we can get complacent easily.
It’s easy to talk about persevering through difficulty but quite another thing to grit our teeth through emotional storms when we’d rather anesthetize ourselves.
The early days of sober living have the same ups and downs as later days and years. But they all feel like avalanches.
The simple fact is that we are feeling again.
We aren’t deadening our senses. We are walking through instead of around things.
The slogans of recovery programs are wonderful reminders of truths that easily slip away in the heat of the moment.
One day at a time. Live and let live. Keep coming back. This too shall pass.
And a dozen other clever one-liners that all do the same vital thing: keep us pointed, leaning and walking forward through whatever difficulty (imagined or real) that is in front of us.
We are supplied spiritual tools and the ability to use them. But we always have to make the choice to do so.
God, thank you for the tools available.
