The Rut
a well-worn grave
TRUTH
Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.
Isaiah 43:18-19
REFLECTION
Ruts are easy. They’re familiar. They feel safe, even when they're not.
I know that well. My old life was a deep rut.
It was easy to fall back into old patterns. The path was worn smooth, well-traveled by addiction and despair.
But that path is a dead end. It's a grave we dig for ourselves, over and over. It promises comfort but delivers emptiness.
The new life is a different road. It's not easy. It’s not smooth. It's often messy and confusing. It’s full of twists and turns, and sometimes it feels like a battle uphill.
But it’s a road that actually leads somewhere. It’s a road that takes me away from the grave I was digging.
And this new road requires work. It requires intention. It demands vulnerability. It's not something that just happens by accident.
This new creation means new choices. New actions. It’s not a passive process. It's a daily choice to leave the old behind.
I still feel the pull of the rut. The allure of the familiar is strong. But I know where that path ends. I've been there before, and I'm not going back.
I choose the new. I choose the messy, sometimes painful, but ultimately freeing path.
God, keep my feet on the new road.
