This Too Shall Pass

Patience Sucks

Now hope that is seen is not hope.

Romans 8:24

Someone told me once that faith is hope with a track record.

It’s one of those random sayings that for whatever reason lodged in my mind and took up residence.

I’ve turned that thought over and told it to countless others in the many years since. And I still believe it to be that special kind of truth that resonates well with most anyone and yet grows and deepens into a spiritual principle as I grow and deepen my faith.

Paul spoke of the tensions between this present life and the completion in the next → the “eager waiting for adoption.”

Addiction is a scar of the world - a malady of our present selves. As we sober up, we ought to wait patiently as we anticipate the full freedom of the life to come.

Patience sucks, though.

Don’t pray for it or you’ll be stuck in the longest lines, catch all the wrong lights, and strike up conversations with the incessantly long-winded.

But time does take time, and as sober days become weeks that add up to months, we accrue a track record of little bits of hope. Little bits of light that we can’t even see till we look back at their accumulated reminder.

It wouldn’t be hope if we saw it ahead of time. And faith wouldn’t be worth much if it were easy.
