REFLECTION

Yes, you can be too smart to get sober.

Happens all the time.

Doesn’t mean you’ll never manage to dumb down enough to get some relief, but it is a serious handicap.

And no, I’m not being entirely facetious. The issue is in the degree of willingness to follow instructions.

Coachability.

Much of early sobriety hinges on our ability to be or to become coachable.

Why?

Because we are really good at trying to do things our way.

We excel at putting our head down and plowing forward with often no idea where we are going.

Sure, we can talk a good game. But when it comes down to it, we are aimless though we may appear successful.

Recovery is all about getting rid of the pretense that we can fix ourselves. It is rooted in the assurance that we are definitely screwed.

We need help.

This is a tough pill to swallow, but it’s the unlock that we need to make any real progress.

God, thank you for making me dumb enough to learn.
