Under-Achievers:

One Day at a Time

Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring.

Proverbs‬ ‭27‬:‭1‬

Today’s Reflection

I get sick of some of recovery’s sayings. I’ll be the first to admit it.

They’re plastered on the walls of the rooms of recovery in framed crochet, and it’s honestly kind of silly.

Forget one day at a time, I want to do two. It’s 2024 and with all the modern conveniences and technological advances, I figure two or even three days at a time is no problem.

I want to be productive. I want to be efficient. I want to crank out the most sobriety from this old school way of life that I can.

Give me a Bible too. Let me map out a progressive new reading plan. I’ll consume it faster than it’s suggested.

Give me a group. Give me a topic. Let me opine.

Sure enough, two days at a time is the new standard. As my tolerance increases, I’m sure I’ll find even more efficient ways to accomplish my sobriety and satisfaction with less effort and longer effect.

No problem here.

The mind of the addict can turn the healthiest of things into self-serving idols.

The beauty of one day at a time is in its insistence on being present. Here and now. With God. With others.

Not without worry; not without pain. We don’t shirk from the realities by trying to conquer and move past what life deals to everyone. We begin to learn to rely on our Creator for the strength to walk through difficulty.

Emerging sober on the other side, we see that there is no shortcut. That one moment at a time is necessary and good. That to skip or combine them would only injure ourselves.

God help me relish in the joy and privilege of living in the moment.
