Well of Souls

For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.

REFLECTION

Where does my hope and wisdom come from?

I want to think it comes from experience and from the simple act of long-term survival.

Sure, this accounts for a baseline bit of it. The longer I persist through this life, the more experience I accumulate.

But in many ways, this is like the difference between existing and living.

There’s a substance to wisdom that we are drawn to when we encounter it.

Hope shines a light outward from nothing.

Passing through the crucible of addiction and then the fires of sobriety did not implant wisdom within me.

Everything I’ve experienced has given me a chance at soaking up the wisdom that comes from deeper—the wisdom from our Creator.

My experiences have molded the man I have become, and I formed many of the filters which have opened me up to receiving wisdom from God.

Importantly, other people have been necessary vessels of those bits of wisdom from God.

I have often been unable or unwilling to receive it straight from the source and so it’s been by the experience and words of others that I’ve gleaned chunks of truth to add to the deep well of wisdom.

I believe we all have access to the deep well, too. It is infinite. It is unmovable.

I used to envy my elders who seemed to know it all (in a good way) and be tapped into that well of wisdom.

But I think we’re all tapped in if we choose to be.

The difference is, I’ve not yet developed the patience to dwell solely on the truths of the well. I flit and start and bang around on my own before peeking in for moments at a time.

God, settle me down that I might dwell on the wisdom you’ve stored up for me.
