What Do I Do?...

meager beginnings

Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you. Ponder the path of your feet; then all your ways will be sure.

Proverbs‬ ‭4‬:‭25‬-‭26

REFLECTION

“As we go through the day, we pause when agitated or doubtful and ask God for an intuitive thought or decision.”

We continue living in the same way that we start living anew. As we sober up and enter into new cadences of daily living, it’s good to remember that most people will not be paying attention to us.

Over time, there is hopefully evidence of our change, but in each new sober moment, we will be the ones over-analyzing situations, emotions and intentions.

A casual smile may be misinterpreted as a cunning smirk. And so, this advice is sound and practical—we go through our days fulfilling our responsibilities. (Maybe for the first time actually following through on some).

And we seek to stay balanced—free of the negative effects of self-centered emotions as things crop up. We’ll have to feel them, and indeed we’ll feel them more intensely now, but we balance and temper our reactions with help called for in prayer. “God, grant me strength…”

We pray for freedom from the bondage of self. And then we go a step further. We ask and look for how we can be helpful to others.

Such a simple shift in our primary focus. But as time goes by, this will make all the difference.

We are safe and protected from the first drink as we learn the way, as we learn to live not for ourselves but for Him and for service to others.

God, grant me new perspective and excitement for life.
