What Do I Pray?...

But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

REFLECTION

Have you ever thought that you just don’t know how to pray? Or that you’re not any good at it? Or are you like me where it feels like your prayers sound exactly the same every day?

Entire books have been written on the subject and I’m certainly no expert, but I do practice it and have some suggestions.

As we get to the end of our drinking, prayers for help and relief and a way out are common and important. The absence of a prayer life is also common.

For those just getting started, don’t over complicate things. Jesus gave us the Lord’s Prayer specifically when asked how to pray.

Use it.

Prayer isn’t about being original, it’s about building relationship with God and directing our thoughts toward His will.

If his disciples asked Him how to pray, we shouldn’t feel bad wondering the same thing.

There are also some great prayers in the Big Book that I’ve found useful over the years. Particularly, the 3rd and 7th step prayers.

History has given us thousands of others that you can easily search for and use. But the important first step is setting aside time to actually pray.

Start the habit. Here again, morning is wonderful. Grab a coffee and take 60 seconds to pray—even if it’s reading a prayer. This is what beginnings look like, and we trust that He will draw us to Him if we do our part in showing up.

God, teach my heart how to talk with you.
